The soundman was excited that I brought my own microphones and we talked about them for a while. The sound system was the best I’ve ever heard. I couldn’t believe it. I thought maybe I was still loopy. The sound came from nowhere and everywhere, like a great opera singer. I can’t listen to recorded opera. I’d rather listen to a jackhammer. But a great singer, live, projects her voice into the whole of a room. It seems to fall from the ceiling. I could see the speakers. They were right there in front of me, high on poles, about the same size and shape as a salad bowl. But the sound did not seem to be coming from them. A kind of magic.
